What this is, and is not: this is an indicative wall-face-area cost estimate, not a fixed quote. It gives you a rough budgeting range so you can compare materials before speaking with a specialist.
The formula: wall face area (length in metres times height in metres) is multiplied by the low and high ends of the indicative per-square-metre cost band for your chosen material, giving a cost range.
Where the figures come from: the per-material cost bands are indicative Sydney metro ranges compiled from current market pricing for installed retaining wall systems, covering materials plus standard labour. They exclude GST, excavation, drainage, backfill and engineering. NSW licensing and Home Building Compensation Fund thresholds referenced elsewhere on this site are set out by NSW Fair Trading.
Assumptions: the calculator assumes standard site access, no significant rock excavation, and no engineering or council approval costs. It holds wall height constant across the full length (a stepped or battered wall will vary). Rock excavation on sandstone-affected blocks, difficult access, drainage, backfill and any required engineering are the main reasons a real quote can sit above this range.
